The Forest and the Environment

CORPORATE FOREST POLICY

Kruger Inc. supports a sustainable and integrated approach to forest management which enables economic development that respects environmental, social and cultural values.  Kruger Inc. manages its forest resources according to the following guiding principles and strives to:

  • Commit to excellence in sustainable forest management on the land base under the company's responsibility;

  • Plan and conduct its forest management activities in a manner that meets or exceeds legal requirements;

  • Comply with applicable regional, provincial and national forest management principles as well as industry codes of practice;

  • Protect key forest resources including timber, wildlife, landscape, water, soil, and biodiversity while managing for the forest's multiples uses, values and benefits;

  • Enhance the long term productivity of the forest, within the ecosystem's capacity, to ensure a cost-competitive fiber supply to its mill;

  • Apply site -specific and ecologically sound silviculture and harvesting techniques and renew harvested forest stands through natural regeneration and reforestation;

  • Promote public awareness and provide for public input, including from aboriginals into its forest management planning process;

  • Promote sustainable forest management and environmental awareness amongst its employees, its contractors, its suppliers and its clients and train employees in their specific forest management responsibilities;

  • Improve its knowledge of sustainable forest management through the support of scientific research and apply results, where appropriate, in its forest management activities;

  • Monitor its forest management systems on a regular basis through internal and external audits and use the results to continually improve its performance in all aspects of sustainable forest management.

Kruger Inc. will provide, in partnership with other organizations, the necessary human, physical and financial resources to implement this forest policy at each of its Canadian subsidiaries.  

ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY

Kruger Inc. and its subsidiaries share with all Canadians important responsibilities to the environment in which we live and work.  It supports the responsible stewardship of resources, including forest, fish, and aquatic habitat, wildlife, air, land and water.  Responsible stewardship makes sustained economic development possible.  In this spirit, the Company believes that a set of principles should govern its attitude and action in environmental matters.  These are as follows:

  • The Company is committed to excellence is sustained yield and multiple use forest management.

  • It will conduct its business in a responsible manner designed to protect the environment, the health and the safety of its employees, customers and the public.

  • It will access, plan, construct and operate facilities in compliance with all applicable regulations.

  • Beyond or in the absence of regulatory requirements, the Company will apply sound management practices to advance environmental protection and minimize environmental impact.

  • The Company will promote environmental awareness amongst employees and the public and train employees in their environmental responsibilities.

  • The Company will report regularly to its Board of Directors on environmental status and performance.

  • The Company will work with governments in the development of regulations and standards based upon sound, economically achievable technologies, and the analysis of environmental impact.

  • The Company will continue to advance the frontiers of knowledge in environmental protection through the support of scientific research and as appropriate, apply such knowledge at its facilities.

  • The Company is committed to the principle of recycling raw materials.  The Company shall endeavor to promote the use of recycled fiber in each division as long as it is economically and environmentally acceptable.

  • The Company shall appoint at each of its operating centers a person reporting to its operating management and responsible for implementing the present policy.

  • The Company shall appoint at its corporate level a person reporting to the corporate management and responsible for implementing the present policy throughout the Company.  The corporate manager of environmental services will maintain a staff liaison with the operating divisions and local mill and plant sites.

22 mammal species, more than 60 species of birds, and 4 amphibian species make their home in the forest managed by the Company.
