Corner Brook Pulp and Paper Woodlands Receives ISO 14001 Registration (Ju;y 2001)

Corner Brook Pulp and Paper Woodlands received a Certificate of Registration for the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System on July 13th in Corner Brook. Patrick Castonguay, Client Services Representative with the Quality Management Institute presented the Certificate of Registration to Patrick Tompkins, Woodlands Manager of Corner Brook Pulp and Paper.

Taking part in the CBPP Woodlands’ presentation of the Certificate of Registration to ISO 14001 are Patrick Castonguay of QMI, Woodlands Manager Patrick Tompkins, Woodlands Environmental Management Coordinator Anne Hollahan and Vice President and General Manager Kevin Sheahan.

Similar to the Quality Management System implemented for ISO 9001, the ISO14001 requires implementation of an Environmental Management System in accordance with defined internationally recognized standards.

The ISO14001 standard specifies requirements for establishing an environmental policy, determining environmental aspects & impacts of products/activities/services, planning environmental objectives and measurable targets, implementation & operation of programs to meet objectives & targets, checking & corrective action, and management review.

"It is clear that Corner Brook Pulp and Paper has a strong and dedicated commitment to the environment and the Environment Management System at all levels of the organization. They have demonstrated a commitment to professional activities in the field. This has led to their success in attaining this registration," said Patrick Castonguay, Client Services Representative for QMI in Montreal.

"We are extremely pleased today to have reached this significant point in Environmental Management. It is very important to not only say that you are doing the right things but to be recognized by the industry to be doing the right things. We are proud of this Registration and pleased with the third party endorsement of our environmental practices," said Kevin Sheahan, Vice President and General Manager of Corner Brook Pulp and Paper.

The key to a successful ISO14001 EMS is having documented procedures that are implemented and maintained in such a way that successful achievement of environmental goals commensurate with the nature and scale of our activities is promoted. In addition, the EMS must include appropriate monitoring and review to ensure effective functioning of the EMS and to identify and implement corrective measures in a timely manner.
