5th Annual Log A Load Charity Hockey Tournament

General Tournament Information

Corner Brook Pulp and Paper Woodlands department is currently organizing the 5th annual Log A Load for Kids Charity Hockey Tournament to be held on February 6, & 7, 2009 at the Pepsi Centre in Corner Brook, NL.

Log A Load For Kids Canada, an initiative of the Canadian Woodlands Forum, is a national giving campaign through which loggers and other forest industry people donate the value of a load of logs, or any amount, to local Children's Miracle Network-affiliated hospital foundations and organize related fundraising events. One hundred percent of all contributions go to local CMN Canada hospital foundations - the proceeds from this Hockey Tournament will go to the Janeway Children’s Hospital.

The 4th annual event in 2008 raised approximately $ 22,000 for contribution to the Janeway; to date approximately $76,000 has been raised. The weekend tournament will see Corner Brook Pulp and Paper Woodlands’ staff, contractors and employees, employees of the Department of Natural Resources in Corner Brook and Lewisporte and friends play for the Log A Load Challenge Cup donated by Northwest Forest Resources Limited.

Each team is required to pay a $350 registration fee and each player collects a minimum of $50 in pledges. Prizes are awarded to individuals who collect the most money in pledges. On behalf of the competing teams, any support you could provide for prizes or any help for this cause would be greatly appreciated. Of course any support provided would be posted on www.cbppl.com with the list of sponsors for this event that provides support to the children of our province. The opportunity to have good prizes to recognize individual fundraising efforts has helped to make the fundraising effort a real success. Please provide us with a digital file of your organizations logo so we can add it to our webpage and tournament posters.

Prizes

Winning team trophy donated by NWFR to go to the winning team, the winning team will be the team that collects the most money (Way to go!). Rumor has it that this competition for the cup is really heating up. Labatt’s will present prizes to the top team in each of the division at the closing ceremonies after the last game on Saturday.

Most importantly prizes will be awarded to the top fundraisers. Three autographed Danny Cleary Jerseys are up for grabs this year with all individuals who raise’s over $100 having their name placed in a draw. For each increment of $100 raised an individuals name will be placed in the draw, so if you raise $500 your name goes in five times. Fundraising prizes will be distributed on the basis of amount raised with the top fundraiser having first choice at the prize table. All other prizes will be winner’s choice, awarded in order of the amount raised.

Fundraising prizes will be awarded on Saturday night at the Pepsi Centre. Fundraising standings and team standings for Hockey will be posted at the Pepsi Centre. If you are in the top group of fundraisers and cannot make it Saturday night please designate a member of your team to select a prize on your behalf.

Sponsor Money and Registration

Teams will be assigned representatives, based on the Division they are in, to handle sponsor and pledge money. This eliminates one person having to do this like in previous years. Team Representatives should collect all pledge money from teammates and present it to the assigned person responsible for collection. If possible we would greatly appreciate payments being made by check.

This may seem like a bit of a chore but think about this, last year on a Friday night our Woodlands secretary with help from a volunteer who just happened to be there had to accept money from approximately 170 people. They now had to start counting and from 7 pm to shortly after midnight counted over $ 20,000 in dimes, quarters, loonies, bills, Cheque and everything in between. This was quite the task and with payment by Cheque will eliminate this chore. A Cheque for sponsor money can be brought to the tournament. Remember all players have to raise a minimum of $50 in pledges. A record of individual and team pledges will be posted at the Pepsi Centre for all to see.

This is the 5th Annual Tournament of this nature and we hope for it to continue on with annual growth.

This is a “Charity” tournament. Please keep this in the forefront, we can still all play hard and respect each other. Remember we all have to return to work on Monday to support our families. The following rules were taken from tournaments of this nature that are held across Canada with the purpose of providing fair play and prevention of injuries to participants.

Log A Load For Kids Tournament Rules

1.      Games are to be 40 minutes running time, 2 periods 20 minutes each.

2.      In the event that a game is tied with 2 minutes remaining or the goal differential is 1, stop time will be in place for the remaining 2 minutes.

3.      A player will only be allowed to play for one team per division in the tournament; allowances will be made for Goaltenders who may be needed due to unforeseen circumstances. Allowances may also be made by the organizing committee in the event that a team is short players due to injury or unforeseen circumstances.

4.      Players who are registered with a Senior Hockey Team, Junior Hockey Team or AAA Midget in the current season are not eligible to play.

5.      While on the ice, all players must wear a CSA approved helmet with the chinstrap properly under the chin.

6.      Each team will have 1 captain and 2 alternates. They will be responsible for your team. Their job is clear. If your team gets a penalty make sure your teammate goes directly to the penalty box. Absolutely “No Sputtering or Muttering” to the referee while going to the penalty box. Note: Rude or offensive language towards on ice official could result in a default loss of 7 – 0. This will be referred to as a team un-sportsmanlike conduct penalty.

7.      All basic hockey rules apply.

8.      Games will start on time with or without a goalie. Once the Zamboni leaves the ice the officials will place 5 minutes on the clock and play will commence once the five minutes runs out.

9.      Un-sportsmanlike conduct will result in dismissal from the tournament.

10.  A penalty call will result in a penalty shot against the team that instigated the penalty. The penalty will be recorded for purpose of applying rule 14 & 15. The shooter will be the player that received the infraction with the exception being a bench minor or puck contact with a high stick (Rule 20), where the shooting team will have the ability to choose a shooter from the players on the ice at the time of the penalty.

11.  Round robin play ties shall remain as ties.

12.  Every team shall play four games.

13.  The team with the most points in their respective Division after round robin play will be the team that wins the Division. In the event that teams that are tied after Round Robin Play, standings will be determined by “plus/minus”. If teams are still tied after that, “less goals let in by a team” will be used to determine standing. If a tie is still an issue it will be determined by money raised by a team.

14.  Two slashing penalties, two high sticking penalties or two roughing penalties or a combo of one of each will be a game misconduct (game being played).

15.  Three penalties of any type in a game will result in a game misconduct.

16.  There will be no intentional body contact hockey, intentional body conduct will result in a 2 minute roughing penalty. See rule 15.

17.  Teams are required to leave the dressing rooms 30 minutes after the end of there past game to allow other teams access.

18.  Tournament Dismissal shall be assessed to any player who is identified by the referee as the instigator or aggressor in a fight. The opposing player may then be assessed the same penalty if he fights back or continues the altercation, a Minor penalty for roughing, or no penalty at all, depending on the circumstances. If two players throw the first punch simultaneously, then both players will be ejected from the tournament. Fighting incidents will be reviewed by the tournament organizers and may result in involved players or teams not being invited to future tournaments.

19.  Contacting the puck with the stick above the normal height of the shoulders is prohibited. When it occurs, play shall be stopped immediately and a Minor penalty shall be assessed to the offending player. The minor penalty will not be grouped into Rule 16 penalties unless injury or contact occurs to an opponent.

20.  Any player who uses a “slap shot” during the game shall be assessed a Minor penalty. If an injury to an opponent results, a Major penalty shall be assessed.
(Note): The use of a “snap shot” is approved. The “snap shot” is to bring the stick back behind the puck a maximum of fifteen inches either on or off the ice (knee height) and to shoot the puck in wrist shot fashion.

21.  Any player who uses the action of a Fake Slap Shot for the purpose of intimidating an opposing player and/or opposing goalkeeper shall be assessed a Minor penalty.

22.  In an attempt to speed up the game, the organizing committee is adopting a no face off rule for icing and off side. In the event of icing or off side the referee will blow his/her whistle, the defending team will take possession of the puck while  the opposing team will clear the zone (outside the blue line).Upon clearing the zone the opposing team can reenter and resume play. This may sound complicated at first but it is no different than a delayed off side call with the exception that the whistle will sound. This rule will force the bulk of line changing being done on the fly and eliminate play stoppages related to it. The great thing about this rule is that we will actually play more hockey in the same period of time.

23.  The Referees are instructed to apply the rules firmly.

“FOR THE KIDS”

Remember, this is supposed to be FUN games for a great cause, the kids.  At the end of the tournament it’s not about who won or lost at hockey, it’s about helping kids and families who have to avail of the Janeway and help to turn them into winners.    Players are expected to be sportsmanlike and keep on ice tempers under control.

Please no drinking and driving utilize a designated sober driver or support the local taxi industry. Have a Safe Drive to and from Corner Brook.

GAME ON!!!

If you have questions or require assistance of any type while in Corner Brook your organizing committee will happy to help you out.
